Ah, the age old question we service-based professionals get asked all. the. time. Well, this is a question that requires a bit of creative thinking and plays into one of the central themes of my service business: there is no "typical" client. You see, it is my firm belief that every client is unique, with their own individual needs and no two businesses present the same challenge. That being said, while there is no "typical" client, there are certain trends I see in my practice that I can share.
First and foremost, in my experience, there are more small businesses than large businesses that come to me for help. From family-run shops to start-up tech firms to solopreneurs to freelance writers, I help them all. These businesses range from established mainstays to new businesses just starting out in the wide world of commerce.
I also find that the type of clients I tend to draw in break down into two basic camps: those with precise but limited resources and those with seemingly endless resources. Those with limited resources are usually looking for a specific project-based service and, once it's done, they move on to another resource to complete their next task. Those with more resources tend to be more far-reaching and have a long-term view that "play the long game" type of strategy.
Seeing as my practice specializes in creating comprehensive digital marketing plans and campaigns, my clients generally come from the professional world and are usually older, more established, and working within more traditional industries such as finance, medical, and legal. They also tend to have a goal-oriented view of what they need and how they want it to look. I've also become acquainted with many small business owners, entrepreneurs, and creative professionals who have more avant-garde views of what they need and how to accomplish it, and these folks often need help understanding the technical side of their projects.
Last but not least, my clients are also incredibly diverse in terms of race, gender, and sexual orientation. I enjoy the challenge of tailoring my services to meet their specific needs and, above all else, I cherish the trust they place in me. The bottom line is that every client is different and no two clients are the same. While I may work with an array of different clients, the thing they share in common is the need for speedy, reliable, and accurate service.
